🇯🇵 About METI & The Japan Internship Program
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is one of the most powerful ministries of the Government of Japan, responsible for industrial policy, international trade, energy security, and economic growth. The Japan Internship Program (JIP) is METI's flagship initiative to attract highly skilled foreign talent to Japanese companies — particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that form the backbone of Japan's economy but often lack international exposure and global talent.
The program has been running since FY2016 and has successfully placed hundreds of interns from across the world into Japanese companies. The program's dual objectives are: (1) to provide foreign professionals with hands-on experience in Japanese business culture and work environments, and (2) to help Japanese SMEs internationalize their operations, expand overseas, and build networks with foreign universities. For Pakistani participants, this is a rare fully funded pathway to gain professional experience in Japan — one of the world's most technologically advanced and culturally rich countries — with the potential for future employment at Japanese companies.

📝 Internship Process — Complete 3-Step Journey
Step 1: Application & Matching (May – July/August/September 2026)
- 1. Recruitment & Information Sessions: Interns who are nationals of OECD/DAC listed countries (excluding China) are recruited. Note: It is not necessary to attend information sessions to apply.
- 2. Application: Submit your application online during 1 May – 30 June 2026. The JIP Office conducts document screening to select candidates. Applicants who pass document screening proceed to the first interview (in Japanese or English). Before the interview, applicants are asked to submit individual documents — certificates (Certificate of Enrollment, language proficiency scores, qualification certificates) and recommendation letters.
- 3. Selection & Matching: The JIP Office matches applicants' experience and preferences with companies' profiles and activity plans, prioritizing combinations expected to achieve the program's objectives. Selected applicants have a second interview with the companies (optional — may not be held), which then make the final decision. Matching results are communicated to both companies and applicants; the match is finalized upon mutual agreement.
- 4. Notification of Results & Contract: After final confirmation, an acceptance notice is sent. Participants submit a pledge before starting. A contract specifying rules and obligations is concluded between the JIP Office, the company, and the intern.
Step 2: Determining Acceptance & Procedures
- Submission of Internship Plan: The host company contacts the intern to discuss the internship's mission, goals, and plans. The company submits an "Internship Plan" to the JIP Office.
- Preparation Before Starting: For In-Person — Office arranges round-trip airfare, travel insurance, mobile phone, and visa support. Host company arranges accommodation, transportation, and living environment. For Online — Office provides computer, internet, and communication tools.
- Pre-Program Orientation & Training: Guidance on internship rules, daily report system, cross-cultural understanding seminar, and internship navigation tips.
- Kick-off Training (In-Person Only): Day 1 — Lifestyle orientation, cross-cultural understanding, Japanese business culture and etiquette. Day 2 — Joint training with the host company for mutual understanding and team building.
Step 3: Internship Implementation
- First Day Orientation: Orientation with the host company — confirm workplace rules, communication methods, and activity points.
- Daily Reports: Submit a daily report to the Office every day — reviewed by the host company.
- Regular Meetings: Hold meetings with the host company at least twice a week and maintain daily communication.
- Mid-term Follow-up Training & Interview: Midway through the internship — discussions on challenges and best practices, networking events.
- Final Wrap-up Presentation: Online presentation of internship outcomes — company manager/supervisor and intern present. Mandatory attendance.
- Career Training: Conducted after all activities are completed. In-Person interns return to home countries the day following career training.
- Conclusion: Submit all surveys, expense reports, and documents by specified deadlines. Post-internship Japanese language training for interns who receive job offers.

- Prepare Language Certificates: JLPT (N3 or above) or English proficiency certificates (TOEFL/IELTS/TOEIC) must be ready for upload. If you have both, upload both.
- Get Recommendation Letters Ready: You'll need a recommendation letter from a university faculty member (current students) or affiliated institution (graduates). Start this process NOW.
- Research Japanese Companies: Familiarize yourself with Japanese business culture, work ethics, and SMEs before the interview. Show genuine interest in contributing to a Japanese company's internationalization.
- Be 100% Committed: Once matched, you CANNOT decline. Apply only if you are fully committed to completing the internship — including traveling to Japan if selected for In-Person.
- Check Time Zone: The deadline is Japan Standard Time (JST). Pakistan is 4 hours behind JST. Submit well before the deadline to avoid time zone confusion.
- Don't Contact for Status Updates: The Office does not respond to inquiries about selection results during the process. Wait for the final result email at the indicated timing.
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Missing the 30 June Deadline: Late applications are not accepted. Submit at least a week early.
- Applying Without Checking Eligibility: Verify your country is on the OECD/DAC list, you meet the age (18-39) and academic (final year/graduate) requirements, and you are NOT residing in Japan.
- Insufficient Language Proof: If claiming Japanese proficiency, you need at least JLPT N3 or CEFR B1. If claiming English, have a proficiency certificate ready.
- Not Preparing Recommendation Letter: This is required after passing document screening. Start the process early — university faculty can take time.
- Applying Without Full Commitment: Once matched, you cannot withdraw. If you have doubts about traveling to Japan or completing the full internship duration, do not apply.
- Ignoring the "No Japan Residence" Rule: Applicants currently residing in Japan are NOT eligible — even if they hold an eligible nationality.
📈 Career Growth After the Internship
- Employment in Japan: The program is explicitly designed to lead to employment at Japanese companies. Many past interns have received job offers after successful internships.
- International Career: Experience with a Japanese SME and METI certification on your CV opens doors to global companies, especially those with Japan-Asia business connections.
- Japanese Language Proficiency: The free 3-month Japanese language training significantly boosts your language skills — valuable for any Japan-related career.
- Cross-Cultural Competence: Demonstrated ability to work in Japanese business culture is a rare and highly valued skill.
